Cubmaster Minute:
As we think about gathering around the campfire, enjoying a good meal
together, and especially enjoying one another's company, let's not
forget those who do not have the same good fortune as we have. Is it
because they aren't as good as we are? NO! Is it because they don't
have the material wealth it takes to be in Scouting? Probably not. Or
is it maybe that they just don't know about the wonderful times
Scouting offers? Most probably. Maybe we need to reach out a hand and
invite them to join us. So as we leave tonight, let's commit ourselves
to remember the good times we have together and to go find someone
else and invite him to join us in the fun we have.

Cubmaster Minute:
Detectives are trained to look for things that the average person might not notice. They need to practice the skills they learn. They are always noticing the smallest details.

We can be detectives, too. We can start noticing the little things about people. The good things about them. The longer you practice looking for the good in people, the easier it becomes to find it. When you constantly look for the good in your parents, brothers, sisters, friends and neighbors the good things about you are easier for them to see. Another great thing that happens when you work at being a "good" detective is that you become happier! Finding the good in others makes us better people.

Cub Scouts raise money to help battle brain cancer

It started with dizziness, vomiting and headaches.

It progressed to brain surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

Two years later, the latest development in 9-year-old Dana Gauthier Jr.'s battle with brain cancer came in the form of a gift from his peers.

He and his fellow cub scouts recently sold about $10,000 in popcorn around the Palo Alto area. They set up in front of grocery stores and went door to door for six Saturdays. The scouts from Den 6 decided to donate a chunk of it to Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, the medical center where their friend, Dana, has undergone treatments. This is the second time they've made such a donation.

Tiger Scouts donate to Franklin County Animal Control

West Frankfort Tiger Scouts den leader Terry Rhodes breathed a sigh of relief and joked about having a clearer basement and garage.

Rhodes explained, “We have been collecting recyclable materials for the past four months. We spent a few days crushing plastic and other materials before taking the load to Southern Recycling in Carbondale.

“We will continue the recycling project and are using this as a community service project to teach others about recycling and saving the earth,” Rhodes said. “The Tiger Scouts want to help others, and we decided to donate the money we collected to Franklin County Animal Control to help Jarrett Broy, the supervisor, and his staff to help care for the animals.”

Cub Scouts adopt Marines in Iraq

Ten-year-old Sean Dowling has never met any of the members of the Marine Corps reconnaissance unit that his Cub Scout pack has adopted, and yet he said it felt as if he was writing to an old friend when he sat down last night to send them a letter.

"It was just a simple letter like how I'd write to my friend if they were in another country," he said. "I consider all the Marines friends because they help our country the most."

The Carmel Cub Scouts met last night in the basement of the Drew United Methodist Church to write letters to the Marines of Alpha Company, 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, who are stationed in Fallujah, Iraq, west of Baghdad.

The boys also will send packages with hand warmers, scarves, snacks and Silly String to the Marines overseas. Marines use Silly String to check for tripwires before walking through a doorway, the Cubs learned last night.

Tiger Cub Scouts chat via ham radio with astronaut

Ground control to Astronaut Bob: There's a whole pack of Tiger Cub Scouts down here who want to chat.

The New Providence Amateur Radio Club brought outer space a little closer to home for children from the Watchung Hills area Jan. 7 as they operated a public ham radio station at the Berkeley Heights Community Center.

The event marked the club's participation in the annual worldwide ham radio event known as Kid's Day. Sponsored by the national amateur radio organization known as the American Radio Relay League, it's meant to pass a passion for getting "on the air" to the younger generation.

Members of Boy Scout Tiger Cub Den No. 268 from Berkeley Heights lined up to ask astronaut Bob Barns, KB2IKC, the club's resident extraterrestrial expert, about space travel and the solar system. Barns answered their questions over the two-way radio.

Cub Scout saves his dad’s life

As a Cub Scout, Chase Devaney learned not to panic in an emergency.

That training came in handy Dec. 26, when his dad, Shannon Devaney, was having a massive heart attack in Stayton. Chase, 10, simply called his mom, Teresa Devaney, and she called 911.

“Chase was calm the whole time,” Shannon, 39, said last week at his Albany home.

“It was kind of scary at first,” Chase recalled. “After we went to the hospital to see him, I knew he’d be all right. But I was still scared.”

Properly Displaying "Half-Staff" Flags

I recently ran across the following post on the Cub Scout Talk Yahoo group. Thought everyone would benifit from Jamie's info.

When President Reagan died I did some research to find out how to display our pack flag properly, since it is attached to a staff in a manner that does not allow for being displayed at "half-staff". What I found was the following - there is a tradition, not documented in the Flag Code, but noted in many other places, which allows for the display of black or purple ribbons on the flag pole, between the top of the flag and the finial.
