Cubmaster Minute:
As we think about gathering around the campfire, enjoying a good meal
together, and especially enjoying one another's company, let's not
forget those who do not have the same good fortune as we have. Is it
because they aren't as good as we are? NO! Is it because they don't
have the material wealth it takes to be in Scouting? Probably not. Or
is it maybe that they just don't know about the wonderful times
Scouting offers? Most probably. Maybe we need to reach out a hand and
invite them to join us. So as we leave tonight, let's commit ourselves
to remember the good times we have together and to go find someone
else and invite him to join us in the fun we have.

Detectives are trained to look for things that the average person might not notice. They need to practice the skills they learn. They are always noticing the smallest details.

We can be detectives, too. We can start noticing the little things about people. The good things about them. The longer you practice looking for the good in people, the easier it becomes to find it. When you constantly look for the good in your parents, brothers, sisters, friends and neighbors the good things about you are easier for them to see. Another great thing that happens when you work at being a "good" detective is that you become happier! Finding the good in others makes us better people.

Cub Scouts raise money to help battle brain cancer

It started with dizziness, vomiting and headaches.

It progressed to brain surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

Two years later, the latest development in 9-year-old Dana Gauthier Jr.'s battle with brain cancer came in the form of a gift from his peers.

He and his fellow cub scouts recently sold about $10,000 in popcorn around the Palo Alto area. They set up in front of grocery stores and went door to door for six Saturdays. The scouts from Den 6 decided to donate a chunk of it to Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, the medical center where their friend, Dana, has undergone treatments. This is the second time they've made such a donation.

Tiger Scouts donate to Franklin County Animal Control

West Frankfort Tiger Scouts den leader Terry Rhodes breathed a sigh of relief and joked about having a clearer basement and garage.

Rhodes explained, “We have been collecting recyclable materials for the past four months. We spent a few days crushing plastic and other materials before taking the load to Southern Recycling in Carbondale.

“We will continue the recycling project and are using this as a community service project to teach others about recycling and saving the earth,” Rhodes said. “The Tiger Scouts want to help others, and we decided to donate the money we collected to Franklin County Animal Control to help Jarrett Broy, the supervisor, and his staff to help care for the animals.”

Cub Scouts adopt Marines in Iraq

Ten-year-old Sean Dowling has never met any of the members of the Marine Corps reconnaissance unit that his Cub Scout pack has adopted, and yet he said it felt as if he was writing to an old friend when he sat down last night to send them a letter.

"It was just a simple letter like how I'd write to my friend if they were in another country," he said. "I consider all the Marines friends because they help our country the most."

The Carmel Cub Scouts met last night in the basement of the Drew United Methodist Church to write letters to the Marines of Alpha Company, 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, who are stationed in Fallujah, Iraq, west of Baghdad.

The boys also will send packages with hand warmers, scarves, snacks and Silly String to the Marines overseas. Marines use Silly String to check for tripwires before walking through a doorway, the Cubs learned last night.

Tiger Cub Scouts chat via ham radio with astronaut

Ground control to Astronaut Bob: There's a whole pack of Tiger Cub Scouts down here who want to chat.

The New Providence Amateur Radio Club brought outer space a little closer to home for children from the Watchung Hills area Jan. 7 as they operated a public ham radio station at the Berkeley Heights Community Center.

The event marked the club's participation in the annual worldwide ham radio event known as Kid's Day. Sponsored by the national amateur radio organization known as the American Radio Relay League, it's meant to pass a passion for getting "on the air" to the younger generation.

Members of Boy Scout Tiger Cub Den No. 268 from Berkeley Heights lined up to ask astronaut Bob Barns, KB2IKC, the club's resident extraterrestrial expert, about space travel and the solar system. Barns answered their questions over the two-way radio.

Cub Scout saves his dad’s life

As a Cub Scout, Chase Devaney learned not to panic in an emergency.

That training came in handy Dec. 26, when his dad, Shannon Devaney, was having a massive heart attack in Stayton. Chase, 10, simply called his mom, Teresa Devaney, and she called 911.

“Chase was calm the whole time,” Shannon, 39, said last week at his Albany home.

“It was kind of scary at first,” Chase recalled. “After we went to the hospital to see him, I knew he’d be all right. But I was still scared.”

Properly Displaying "Half-Staff" Flags

I recently ran across the following post on the Cub Scout Talk Yahoo group. Thought everyone would benifit from Jamie's info.

When President Reagan died I did some research to find out how to display our pack flag properly, since it is attached to a staff in a manner that does not allow for being displayed at "half-staff". What I found was the following - there is a tradition, not documented in the Flag Code, but noted in many other places, which allows for the display of black or purple ribbons on the flag pole, between the top of the flag and the finial.

A Charles City Cub Scout recently had the privilege of presenting a special honor to one of Iowa’s most famous sons. Harrison Sheckler (right), the son of Ken and Ellen Sheckler, was chosen as the Cub Scout representative to present world-renown singer Simon Estes with Scouting’s highest honorary music award at the Distinguished Iowa Citizen Award Banquet held Nov. 21 at the Des Moines Marriott Hotel. Estes was named as the 2006 Distinguished Iowa Citizen for his contributions to the State of Iowa, as well as internationally, with music and children.

Cub Scouts make winter warmer for third-graders

Brighton Cub Scout Pack 347 from Maltby Middle School recently helped make the holidays a lot brighter for some children.

The Cub Scouts originally set out to identify a local family who they would purchase presents for during the holidays. The Cub Scouts eventually decided, though, that they would adopt 26 third-graders in Michigan.

The Cub Scouts had received word of a third-grade class that needed hats and mittens this winter. So, the pack set out to collect enough cans in order to buy hats and mittens for their Michigan classmates. This was the first part.

After returning the cans, the Cub Scouts then looked for the type of hats and mittens that would be warm enough for the winter.

Kids get a kick out of Soccer and Scouting combo

MONROE — With dad looking on from the bleachers, six-year-old Kiesean Jones was running about, playing indoor soccer with his friends. At one point, Kiesean stopped to help a fallen teammate.

With that simple gesture of teamwork, dad's smile grew even wider.

Jones and about 40 other elementary school-aged kids were at The Field Sports Arena as part of the very first "Soccer & Scouting Tournament" to be held in Ohio.

According to Tammy Riddle, who coordinated Friday's event, the Soccer & Scouting program is just one way the Boy Scouts of America is working to reach Hispanic youth, at-risk boys and their families in the community.

"We want to provide an opportunity for the growing Hispanic population in Butler County to have things to do," Riddle said. "Soccer is a way that they can be a part of something they are familiar with, and it can introduce them to Cub Scouting as well."

Scouts buy vests for K-9 officers

Brownsburg - There is something so pure about a child's heart that allows them to work extra hard to raise hundreds of dollars and revel in the fact that all their hard work is rewarded with a badge.

Cub Scout Philip Gegner explains. "The K-9 officers came in and said the bulletproof vests were a lot of money and they needed more because the dogs were valuable to them. So we decided to raise money so they could protect their dogs."

Brownsburg Police Lt. Pat Bullock told us, "I've heard of lots of dogs getting shot and dying in the line of duty. So hopefully this will help prevent anything like that in the future."

Philip Gegner says they worked hard to get the money.

Cub Scout recognized for heroic act

BRICK TOWNSHIP - It only took an instant for Christopher Gall to embody all of the ideals he learned in the Cub Scouts.

Gall, 8 was swimming in his grandmother's pool in Point Pleasant, when an 11-year-old boy slipped under the water.

The boy was from northern New Jersey and didn't have a lot of experience in a pool. The boy was in the shallow end of the in-ground pool and accidentally slid down into the deeper side. The boy came up for air once and went under the water again and began to panic.

A quick-thinking Gall, who had only recently learned to swim himself, swam over to the boy and pulled him to safety.

Scouts Giving the Gift of a Christmas Tree

Morgan Hill - A Christmas tree is one of the most popular traditions this time of year - but for a number of low-income families, it's the last thing on their shopping lists.

Wanting to bring a little holiday cheer to families at Sobrato Transitional Apartments in Gilroy, local Cub Scouts have raised $520 to buy 18 trees they will deliver Saturday to the needy residents.

Cub Scouts honor soldiers with care package project

WASHINGTON TWP. When the members of Cub Scout Pack 81 decided to send packages to GIs serving in Iraq, they went all out even soliciting Halloween candy from young trick-or-treaters.

Den Leader Peter Giovetis said his den started with the notion of putting together packages for members of the 5th Squad, 117th Cavalry, an Army National Guard unit headquartered in Vineland.

The project grew into a pack-wide operation, and now the packages will be heading to the war zone.

Family Speaks Out About Cub Scout's Death

(CBS4) GREENLAND, N.H. We're hearing from the family of a young boy, who died after falling off a float at a New Hampshire Christmas Parade.

On Monday, Thomas Fogarty's family spoke for the first time about the 9-year-old boy who was celebrating Christmas with his fellow Cub Scouts. The float -- being pulled by a trailer through downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire -- pulled Thomas Fogarty to his tragic death.

"At this time, we believe that Thomas somehow fell from the float and was run over by the trailer's double-axle wheels," said Chief Michael Magnant of the Portsmouth, New Hampshire Police Department.

South Jerseyans rally to help troops in Iraq for holidays

For 7-year-old Matthew Mahon, this holiday season is about giving, not getting.

The Washington Township boy has collected close to $1,000 in donations to buy calling cards for New Jersey soldiers in Iraq. The second-grader, who's taking part in a campaign by his Cub Scout pack, says he won't stop until he hits the $2,000 mark.

"I think the soldiers will be pretty happy," he predicted. "Because if I got a present from New Jersey when I'm in Iraq, I'd be pretty happy."

Cub Scouts work to make Butterfield Park shine

A new sign at Butterfield Park reminds members of Cub Scout troops of the time and effort they have invested in the last 20 months keeping the park environs healthy and litter free.

The Adopt-A-Park sign was posted earlier this month in the park ramada. The scouts themselves, 50 boys ages 7 to 10 from Packs 780 and 781, were lauded for their work during a Parks and Recreation Commission meeting Nov. 15.

UNION (Nov 27): The bravery, calmness under duress, and quick thinking of four Warren children helped save the life of a drowning youngster this summer.

The heroic boys, ages 8-10, played a pivotal role in rescuing a young man who had slipped into the water July 25 at Ayer Park in Union.

Eastport Cub Scouts help out the SPCA

The Wolf Scouts of Pack 153 affiliated with St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Eastport helped the SPCA of Anne Arundel Country celebrate Thanksgiving a few days early this year.

As part of their work in earning their Wolf rank, the boys visited the SPCA animal shelter on Bay Ridge Avenue earlier in the fall. They learned about the important things the SPCA does to help protect stray animals and learned how to take care of pets properly. The Scouts were so impressed with the SPCA's work that they decided to "adopt" the organization and help them through the Scouting "Good Turn for America" project.

Scouts honor veterans in parade

It was a sea of Scouts: Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, Brownies. There must have been 500 Scouts and their parents marching in the Veterans Day parade - more than in any other parade in recent memory.

"This is something we feel we should do," said Gary Seamans, Cubmaster of Tallahassee Pack 118. "So there are a lot of us out here today."

Scouts earn American Heritage badge

Thirty Boy Scouts earned, and 61 Cub Scouts met requirements for the American Heritage badge in October at the Christian Waldschmidt Homestead in Camp Dennison. Participating troops included Blue Jacket District Troop 243, Delhi Township Boy Scout Troop 350 and Cub Scout Pack 300, Indian Hill Boy Scout Troop 502, Makatewah District Troop and Pack 18, Milford Cub Scout Troop 280, and Sharonville Troop 803.

Swat Pest Management Hosts Cub Scout Entomology Lesson

Chevrolet Partners With Safe Kids Worldwide And Cub Scouts To Promote Safety

DETROIT, 2006-10-24 – Cauley Chevrolet in West Bloomfield was selected by Chevrolet to participate in a 10-city pilot to help keep youngsters safe around vehicles. Chevrolet and Safe Kids Worldwide are teaming up with the Cub Scouts to help six-to-nine year-olds learn about vehicle safety. The program kicked off earlier this year in Charlotte and is expanding to 10 pilot cities across the U.S.

“This truly shows the depth and breadth of Chevrolet and General Motors,” says Ed Peper, Chevy General Manager. “We have worked with Safe Kids Worldwide for several years. This is a chance for us to work cooperatively with the Cub Scouts to reach an important demographic – families with boys ages six through eight– and teach them how to make good decisions in and around vehicles.”

'Coward' Thief Robs Young Cub Scout

(CBS 3) UPPER CHICHESTER, Pa. Police are looking for a cowardly criminal who ripped off a Cub Scout that was raising money for his troop.

Seven-year-old Brennan Starr was selling popcorn inside an Upper Chichester WaWa when the thief snatched $200 out of his mom's hand.

"He just grabbed the money envelope out of my mom's hands and she held it for a minute of two," explained Brennan.

Cub Scout's letter prompts citywide 'wave' of goodwill

What began as a simple letter to the editor has ended up as an official Blair holiday.

Last week, Enterprise Publishing received a letter to the editor from Riley Holoubek, who will be 10 this Nov. 6.

The letter simply stated the community can spread a little cheer by making an effort to wave to each other. He suggested setting aside a day this week specifically for that purpose.
